Acute Care Hospitals with Psychiatric/Behavioral Health Units
Many hospitals offer a locked behavioral health unit inside the main hospital. These hospitals are also able to address any medical concerns. Normally a patient will be admitted through the emergency room. They will be evaluated medically before being transferred to the behavioral health unit for mental health stabilization.
If someone is in a crisis, posing a danger to themselves or others, a hospital is the right temporary placement. Here they will be evaluated and have 24/7 care to ensure their safety. Please call 911 in case of such an emergency.
Patients tend to stay for 3-9 days on this locked behavioral unit. They will meet with social workers, nurses and psychiatrists to address any issues. This is a safe place to receive medication changes and monitoring. Groups and activities are provided and patients are encouraged to participate. Staff assist patients in discharge planning and follow up appointments to ensure continuity of care.

Free Standing Psychiatric/Behavioral Health Hospitals
Free Standing Behavioral Hospitals offer behavioral health services ONLY. Many times these hospitals are not equipped to manage major medical issues. Patients may be admitted directly or need to go to an emergency room first to be medically cleared. Like the acute care hospitals, patients will meet with social workers, nurses and psychiatrists to address any issues. This is a safe place to receive medication changes and monitoring. Groups and activities are provided and patients are encouraged to participate. Staff assist patients in discharge planning and follow up appointments to ensure continuity of care. These hospitals provide more services and specialize in mental health. They also provide treatment for children, adolescents and adults.

Although State operated hospitals provide short term stays, they are used for longer stays when needed. They are also used for patients going through the court system for stabilization.
